My Carrot Cake

Since it's the Holiday season, there's a lot of baked goods around. When I came here in the United States, I learned how to bake out from the box or from scratch. I just follow the procedures. I think I'm good at it. So three nights ago, I baked a carrot cake.

It was good. My husband and I are getting there to finish it all. I just wish that my mom and sisters can taste what I am baking this Christmas. I miss them so much. I wonder what to bake next.

Brazo de Mercedes

Two nights ago, I attempted to bake my favorite rolled cake, Brazo de Mercedes. It's been years that I haven't eaten this kind of rolled cake or sometimes referred to as jelly roll. Like what I said in my previous post, I am going to enjoy baking and bake my favorites.

I gather all the ingredients and visited the website, Panlasang Pinoy and copied how to make the rolled cake. I thought that making Brazo de Mercedes is not easy to create but when I watched the video, I fully understand everything. It wasn't that hard at all. As you can see from the photo I posted, I made a mistake rolling the cake. But it tastes really good as my husband and I ate it all the next day.

Hello December!

It's the second day of the month of December, the most wonderful time of the year! I wonder what great things I have done for the year 2010. I am sure there's a lot of them. I made lots of friends this year and it is so nice to let them know how I value the word called friendship. I finished eating my Thanksgiving dinner two hours ago and now, I am sitting in-front of my computer looking for great deals online. In few hours, Black Friday will start and people will come rushing to the stores and start shopping. Black Friday is traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. I have a few lists on my mind on what to buy these Holidays.

I am going to start gathering online coupons that will help me save money from shopping. Since winter season is just around the corner, I need nice jackets to keep me warm. The weather is unpredictable and we should always be ready no matter what. When I was in North Dakota, I always make sure that I'm wearing an insulated jacket every time we go out.

Shopping is always fun. It's every woman's therapy. No matter what part of the country you live in, or what time of the year it is, everyone needs a jacket or coat that is functional yet stylish. Even in the spring and summer months, a light-weight or soft-shell jacket is sometimes needed indoors when the air conditioning is still cranked up. The reason why, I like investing my hard-earn money to some nice, stylish, comfortable jackets and coats that will last long. So for the coming days, I am going to go shopping because I am going to bring Holiday cheer to all my loved ones.

The Joy of Baking

Baking is one of the things I want to learn. Yes I can cook and I started cooking at a young age. My mother taught me well in cooking but baking is different. I wanted to make baked goods such as bread, pie, cakes and cookies from scratch. I want to learn that someday I can make really good carrot cake and banana nut bread (they're my favorite). I made some cakes out from the box but I wanted to explore the joy of baking.

Must Love Horses

Did you watch the movie, Dreamer? It is a 2005 American family drama film and an inspired true story of an injured Thoroughbred race horse named Soñador . A little girl named Cale have fallen in love at first sight before the accident of the horse. She began to sneak out to the barn at night to see her (the horse) while seeing her grandfather to know more about horses. Cale loves to watch horse racing after school and started horse betting on her favorite horse.

It was a beautiful movie for the whole family. I loved it and cried at the end of the movie. It inspire those people, especially the father and daughter/son who lack a much needed bond. Someday, I want to watch a real horse racing betting, not just in the movie. I want to see the whole thing right before my eyes... someday, I will do that.

Who wants to go camping? When I was in grade school, I was a Girl Scout. I always looked forward for the activities especially camping. I love camping, that even to these days, I enjoy it together with my husband. Once in a while, we make it a point that we go camping somewhere where we will enjoy the beauty of one place. Halloween Costumes

For this year's Halloween (2010), I made sure that my husband will wear a costume. I think he liked the idea of wearing one when he saw me wearing the "Dorothy" costume last year when we were in Hawaii. He enjoyed watching me walking around the Waikiki strip and he's been very supportive taking pictures of me together with the other people wearing their own costumes.

My husband is wearing the Granny Wolf costume and I am Little Red Riding Hood. We made sure that our basket was full of candies so we have something to give when kids will come by and greet us "Happy Halloween" or "Trick or Treat!" We had fun. The kids were all dressed up in their own Halloween costume. We will definitely do it again next year! I wonder what will be our costumes?

Halloween 2010

Are you ready for the Halloween? Almost! I ordered my Halloween costume online and I got it three (3) days ago. It's going to be a fun Halloween (I guess!) because my husband will be wearing his costume. I wish that my friend will join us but she's going to work. My hubby told me to buy lots of candies so we have something to give for the Trick or Treat. I don't know how many kids in the neighborhood will be knocking at the door but for sure, there's something for them when they come.

I still have one thing to get to complete my Halloween outfit. This will be my second Halloween experience (wearing a costume) in my entire life. The first Halloween experience? I was in Hawaii. And I think, it's a wonderful experience to do it just for fun. I am sure that some of my friends are already planning on what to wear. I guess, I will be waiting for their photos to be posted in their Facebook.

Beautiful Log House

When my husband and I got married, we stayed at this beautiful Mountain Village surrounded by log houses. It was just beautiful! It was carefully planned and beautifully built. I love the idea of owning a beautiful log house and decorate the whole house!

Considered an evolution towards healthy communities, different neighbourhoods present different festivals on that day and each one has a different flavour. It is truly a cultural celebration in Trent Jordan’s Vancouver. Volunteers can participate in their own neighbourhoods or in any festival that interests them. For those with no time to volunteer, just come and enjoy. There is lots of fun for young and old alike, but the best part is to experience the magic of the future of a car-free Vancouver.

Previous festivals took place in Kitsilano, Main Street, Commercial Drive and West End. Organizers are welcome, also, pod-heads, spontaneous participants or a day-of volunteer for a few hours or the whole day. Each community sponsors its own festival as an intervention to the constant traffic. It is a wonderful example of how in Trent Jordan’s Vancouver the staff and elected officials of the City of Vancouver support the citizen led Car-Free Festival.

Some of the activities you will see and participate in are skateboard demonstrations, Roller Derby, multimedia performances, square dancing lessons and Chamber Music. An Orchestra Concert at Church

My kids have always had some kind of music concert going on—even now that they’re in college. My daughter plays the violin and my son plays the trumpet, and both still actively play in shows whenever they come home. I’m just thrilled that they’ve both kept practicing their music after all these years!

They actually played together yesterday night in the church orchestra, which was a blast to see. Well, my husband and I hit traffic and got there a little late, so we had to sit closer to the back. I thought the group sounded great, but my husband kept asking me if I could hear the music very well. I told him that I could—and that if he couldn’t, to maybe consider getting his hearing checked.

It took a bit of convincing, but he actually went our local Miracle-Ear location today to get the test. As it turns out, he definitely needed hearing aids, and has needed them for a while. Luckily, the kids are coming home to play in the orchestra again in a few weeks, so he’ll be able to hear them crystal clear!

Autumn Begins...

... tomorrow, September 23! I'm just excited to hear about the Fall season. This means that my summer job will be over pretty soon. My wife and I rarely get to enjoy a night out because of conflicting work schedules. During the summer months, our schedules do relax a bit more and we tend to take advantage of this and spend quality evenings together. One of our favorite things to do is go to the local drive-in for a number of reasons.

We get to see two movies for less money than a movie theater charges for one movie ticket. The drive-in that we go to has three screens so there is always a great variety, and there is almost always something we want to see. The best part about it is we get to bring our two dogs with us.
