Gaston Cantens - A Wide Range of Experience

Gaston Cantens serves as Vice President of Corporate Relations for Florida Crystals Corporation in West Palm Beach, Florida.  Florida Crystals farms 187,000 acres of land in Palm Beach County, where the company also owns and operates two sugar mills, a sugar refinery, a rice mill, a packaging and distribution center and a biomass power plant.  Florida Crystals recycles sugar cane fiber and municipal wood waste to generate renewable energy.  The New Hope Power facility in Palm Beach County is adjacent to Florida Crystals’ Okeelanta facility and powers its sugar operations there and has the capacity to also power tens of thousands of homes.  Florida Crystals’ power plant is the largest of its kind in North America.

As Vice President of Corporate Relations, Gaston Cantens serves as the company’s spokesperson. He also plays an important role in the company’s government relations.

Gaston Cantens served as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 1998 to 2004. During his time in the House, Cantens served as chairman of several committees and served in a wide variety of leadership positions, including Majority Whip. He was consistently ranked as one of the most effective legislators in the Florida House by media outlets.

While working as a Representative, Cantens sponsored and passed numerous legislative initiatives dealing with a wide ranging spectrum of issues in criminal justice, domestic violence, breast cancer prevention and research, higher education, as well as real estate and administrative procedures issues.  He also sponsored and secured funding for numerous colleges and universities as well as local hospitals and organizations helping seniors and disabled citizens.  His work on such a wide range of topics led him to be one of the finalists considered by then Governor Jeb Bush as a replacement to fill the Lt. Governor position vacated by Frank Brogan in 2003.

In addition to his time at Florida Crystals Corporation and as a Representative, Cantens has worked as an adjunct professor at Florida State University College of Law, St. Thomas University School of Law and Miami-Dade College.  He has taught courses in Real estate law, business law and legal research and writing.

Gaston Cantens also served as a high school teacher and basketball coach at the high school and college levels. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami and a juris doctor degree from St. Thomas University.
